The Venice Charter constitutes an apex for restoration in architecture, a position reached, among other things, thanks to the consistent presence of international players whose competence and representativeness in the field of architectural conservation were widely recognised by their contemporaries, the sharing and incredible diffusion of its principles which, even at the beginning of this century, were still being invoked by restorers from different countries, from Russia to the Americas. The choice of proposing a clearly defined operational tool that could be easily translated into design guidelines, profoundly different from the syncretic proposals elaborated later, was at the same time the basis of both success and numerous criticisms. In the face of a scenario so debated over time, the formulation of a synthetic balance sheet seems unrealistic, but the contribution nevertheless proposes to elaborate some useful points for reflection sixty years after the document was drafted.
